Quotes I Love

We should be taught not to wait for inspiration to start a thing. Action always generates inspiration. Inspiration seldom generates action. – Frank Tibolt.

Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. – Calvin Coolidge

. . .

They who lack talent expect things to happen without effort. They ascribe failure to a lack of inspiration or ability, or to misfortune, rather than to insufficient application. At the core of every true talent there is an awareness of the difficulties inherent in any achievement, and the confidence that by persistence and patience something worthwhile will be realized. Thus talent is a species of vigor. – Eric Hoffer

We lie the loudest when we lie to ourselves. – Eric Hoffer

You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club. – Jack London

  1. Hey! Feel free to leave a quote you like… I won’t mind.

  2. Jeff, Here is one I like:

“Luck is preparation meeting opportunity.” – Oprah Winfrey

  3. John, thank you. I like that one too. Though I think it’s a paraphrase of a quote from the 1800’s by English novelist, Edward Bulwer-Lytton. He said, “There is no such thing as luck. It’s a fancy name for being always at your duty, and so sure to be ready when good time comes.”

  4. “The way to create art is to burn and destroy ordinary concepts and to substitute them with new truths that run down from the top of the head and out from the heart” Charles Bukowski.

  5. OH YEAH! That I like!

  6. There are two that I love, both paraphrased I believe,
” The universe is change; our life is what our thoughts make it.”
    and
” The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts, therefore quard accordingly…”
    Marcus Aurelius

  7. Nickie, thank you for sharing those. They’re excellent.

  11. Love your poetry and these quotes as well! Here are a few that run deep in my own soul.

“Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away.” ~Dinah Craik

“Love is what makes you smile when you’re tired.” ~author unknown

“Do not think that love, in order to be genuine, has to be extraordinary.”
    ~ Mother Teresa

“Human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.” ~William James

  12. Great quotes, SeptemberMama.

  13. “Repeal that [welfare] law, and you will soon see a change in
their manners. … Six days shalt thou labor, though one of
the old commandments long treated as out of date, will again be
looked upon as a respectable precept; industry will increase,
and with it plenty among the lower people; their circumstances
will mend, and more will be done for their happiness by inuring
them to provide for themselves, than could be done by dividing
all your estates among them.” Ben Franklin

“It would be thought a hard government
that should tax its people one tenth part.” Ben Franklin

I wake up every morning at nine and grab for the morning paper. Then I look at
the obituary page. If my name is not on it, I get up. Ben Franklin
