all is right

covers are filled
with tired children
pillows hold heads
with dreams in flight
beds are carrying
their precious cargo
gently through
a peaceful night
set adrift
on sleep’s vast ocean
all are well
and all is right

lost

just when i think i can see
when i think i’ve caught a glimpse
of a familiar landmark
a clue to where i should turn next
it’s disappears
it simply vanishes
into the shadows of doubt
that surround me in your absence

i look around for a friendly face
someone i could trust to guide me
but everyone feels like a stranger
even the image in the mirror
stares back at me, like a child
and the children riding with me
are simply counting the days
till you return

i’m lost without you

my solemn spot

I found a spot
where the kids are not.
The time I’ve got
is not a lot.
But on this pot
a moment’s bought
to sit and jot
a passing thought
before I’m caught
before this spot
my solemn spot
is brought to not
by chance or plot
by a screaming horde
of tiny tots.

written entirely in the bathroom

breakfast laughter

woke from sleeping
youngest leading
morning greeting
coffee’s beeping
mouths need feeding
family seating
smiles are leaping
laughter seeping
joy in heaping
hands are sweeping
clock is creaping
times like these
are fast and fleeting

listening to the kids laugh at breakfast

8:10-8:16 am

conversation with my daughter

daddy?
baby?
watch me!
happily!
help me!
surely!
hug me!
gladly!
kiss me!

certainly!
love me!
eternally!

nap time

i’m just tired

of please eat your crusts
and musn’ts and musts
of stop making noise
and pick up the toys
of ’cause I said so
and where does it go

so you all need to go take a nap
